Jo Malone Holiday Candle Collection

If you've followed this blog for a significant amount of time, you are probably well aware how much I love candle sets. Especially holiday candle sets. This year, the Jo Malone miniature candle collection had my favorite, Sweet Almond & Macaroon so I decided to go for it.

Stock Image via
All of these scents I have tried before, with the exception of the Grapefruit Home Candle. That I will have to give my impression of cold sniff, but let me talk a bit about the scents.

The Jo Malone Grapefruit Home Candle is a lovely, fresh scent. The Grapefruit Cologne has never been a personal favorite, as I don't wear citrus scents all that often, but the candle scent is lovely, fresh and a bit sweet at the same time.

Jo Malone London describes the scent as "Abundant grapefruit groves in coastal Spain. Rosemary, peppermint and pimento add perfect piquancy to grapefruit's bright and sunny nature. Uplifting and refreshing. To uplift, to wind down, or simply to add an air of luxury. Transform the atmosphere with luxury and opulence."

This is a lovely, classic scent that could be burned year-round to bring light and fresh life into your home. I appreciate the candle form of this scent much more than the Cologne.

The only truly "holiday" scent included in this collection is Frosted Cherry & Clove, but it is one of the best Jo Malone holiday Home Candle scents, and I wish it would be offered year 'round, as I much prefer this scent to other holiday offerings.

Frosted Cherry & Clove is both sweet and spicy, and is reminiscent of a fruitcake, at a time when fruitcake was a high treat during the Yuletide season. The brief description I was able to find for the Frosted Cherry & Clove Deluxe Candle says "Celebrate winter with a uniquely seasonal flourish. Frosted Cherry and Clove is rich with winter spices to fulfill your festive dream. Notes: clove, cherry, cinnamon, amber."

Although I wouldn't wish this as a Cologne Scent (I don't really want to smell like fruitcake) it is perfect for home gatherings during this festive season.

Peony & Blush Suede is the other Home Scent also available in Jo Malone Cologne form. This is, without a doubt, one of the best sellers when it comes to the Cologne, and is also (surprise, surprise) one of the Cologne scents I don't particularly care for. However, the Candle scent is lovely, a soft, slightly floral, warm scent.

Jo Malone describes the Home Candle as "The essence of charm. Peonies in voluptuous bloom, exquisitely fragile. Flirtatious with the juicy bite of red apple and the opulence of jasmine, rose and gillyflower. Mingling with the sensuality of soft, blush suede. Luxurious and seductive. To uplift, to wind down, or simply to add an air of luxury. Transform the atmosphere with luxury and opulence."

This would be a lovely scent for a relaxing, luxurious bubble bath.

My favorite Home Candle scent that Jo Malone does, and the main reason I wanted to get my hands on this scent. Sweet Almond & Macaroon is delicious, gourmand, sweet but also warm. It is, honestly, my perfect Home scent. It is not often included in sets like this, along with it's counterpart Green Tomato Leaf, and I was thrilled to see it. This is only available in Candle scent, although I would wear it as Cologne.

Jo Malone describes this as "Delectable macaroon. A comforting confection of sweet almond and creamy coconut. Rich with cherries. Softened by vanilla. Warm and cocooning." and that is a very apt description. Macaroons are NOT macarons, and are made with coconut. That scent component keeps this candle light and sweet without being a heavy gourmand. Sweet Almond has the cunning ability to be both enhancing and transforming of the other scents, and the is an all-around beautiful, underrated Candle scent.

The final selection is Green Tomato Leaf, another permanent Home Candle scent in the Jo Malone catalog. Like Sweet Almond & Macaroon it fills a very specific niche - specifically the niche for those who want a very verdant, fresh Home Candle scent.

It's difficult to describe Green Tomato Leaf to someone who hasn't smelled it and the best I can do is that it smells exactly like you are probably imagining. Jo Malone describes it as thus - "Glasshouse tomatoes. Earthy, leafy and full of sunshine. Crisp with stem-green galbanum. Lively with artemesia, fruity with cassis, resting on a cushion of moss. Tangy and evocative."

Tangy. Evocative. Yes. Not a scent for everyone, which is why I was so happy to see it in this year's sampler. Because it is not available in Travel Candle, you're taking a risk if you buy the Home Candle un-sniffed. If you love Green Tomato Leaf though, you will love it.

This selection of candle scents is exceptionally well-rounded, in my opinion. Unlike past collections which have been limited to best sellers or well-known scents, Jo Malone chose to include a true olfactory variety in the 2018 Holiday Miniature Candle collection, and for that reason alone I would recommend the set to and home fragrance lover. In my personal preference, the substitution of Pomegranate Noir for Peony & Blush Suede would have made this set perfect, but I can see why they didn't.

However - I have one major caveat with this collection and that is the price. Unless you are buying as a gift, or to sample the home scents not readily available in upmarket retailers, for the price, you are not getting the best deal.

Photo via

Each of the Mini Candles weighs in at just 35g - not an unheard of size. Diptyque, who makes candles of similar price and quality regularly offers 35g mini candles as purchase incentives or in sets similar to this. The difference is in price. The last diptyque set I purchased retailed for $75 USD. Now, perhaps we're taking inflation into account, but honestly, that is a much more reasonable price. The brings each 35g candle to $15 USD - a fair price for the quality. A standard diptyque candles is 190g and runs $65 - 175g total weight for $10 more is reasonable considering you are getting a selection.

However, the math doesn't work as well with Jo Malone, because now you are paying $20 USD per 35g candle. The Home Candles run $67 USD with the exception of Frosted Cherry & Clove, which is only available as a Deluxe Candle and will set you back about $200. perhaps that inclusion justifies the price, that would be up to you to decide. The Jo Malone Home Candles are 200g each and run $67 USD - If your interest is in only one or two scents (excluding Frosted Cherry & Clove) you are better off just purchasing the scents of your choice. 175g total weight is now $32 USD more than a 200g candle. The mini candles are truly mini, as well - don't be fooled into thinking you will get a set of five travel candles - at 60g the Travel Candles seem small, but the minis are almost half the size.

Photo via
For comparison's sake here is the mini candle next to a sample of skin care, in rather chunky packaging. This is a .5oz skin care sample in packaging nearly the same width and height of the 35g Mini Candle.

I'm not trying to turn anyone off the set, but as a reviewer it is my duty to make sure anyone who is considering buying this set understands what they will be getting.

Pros: Three scents difficult to find in other sets, one holiday exclusive. Lovely packaging and travel friendly. You can use these little babies anywhere.

Cons: Price per candle is steep, Frosted Cherry & Clove is a holiday limited scent that is sold out most places online.

All in all, my take would be to buy this set if you were so inclined It is still available at (at the time of this writing) and is a lovely gift for any candle or home fragrance fan. I hope they do another set like this next year, but for perhaps a bit less $$$. Final verdict - ♦♦♦♦

Perfume SALE?!?! Yes Way!!

Our annual day of shopping till we're dropping is upon us, and I am so excited to share this with you! One of my favorite discount perfume retailers is offering massive discounts for Black Friday and Cyber Monday. is one of my go-tos for discontinued, or discounted fragrances. This post is not sponsored but all links are affiliate links, so help a sister out. 💖

On BLACK FRIDAY and CYBER MONDAY will be offering 20% off EVERYTHING, site wide. You know I'm planning to takes advantage so here are my top three picks from the site.

Feerie by Van Cleef & Arpels

This isn't a new scent, nor does it make my top 10. However the flacon, made by renowned jewelry house Van Cleef & Arpels is worthy of a stage.

There is currently only one option left on the site, a 3.4 retired tester bottle. You aren't getting much product and the price ($26.99 USD) reflects that. I however, only really want to bottle so that's a steal for me.

Check it out on the website.

L'Heure Bleue by Guerlain

One of House Guetlain's classic scents L'Heure Bleue has passed the test of time (over 100 years) and is a decadent yet sophisticated scent for any woman in your life. It's nature and complexity allow it to be one of those unicorn scents that smell good on most people.
A perfume that normally runs upwards of $75 USD can be found between $30 - $90 on the site.

Check out L'Heure Bleue (or the Twilight hour in English) on

Givenchy pour Homme (Red Lable)  by Givenchy

I you want to gift a man any scent, this is the one. The best, most sexy men's cologne that was, sadly, removed from mass market. It is musky and sexy and woody and everything perfect. I have not yet found a decent replacement so you can be SURE I'm grabbing this guy on sale, especially since 1.7 fl oz is running just under $40USD.

Pro tip - if you (or your guy) prefer a fresher, more citrus scent, try the Blue Label version - all the sexy but with the heavier musk components removed

Check out Givenchy pour Homme on the website.

Bonus - 6 L'amoureux by D&G

D&G discontinued their mass market line of tarot
inspired scents, with the exception of 3 L'imperatrice but there several favorites of mine still in the collection.

This scent is out of stock currently, and chances are likely it won't return soon.

View it on the website. is great for the fragrance fan! The have everything you're looking - brand new, trending fragrance, indie/niche houses, discontinued scents and even gift sets! Yes, they're legit and all scents come from overflow stock, defaulted testers, and the brands themselves among others. DO not miss out on these great deals! Indulge with 20% this weekend only!

MoonaLisa Summer 2k18

A quick little review of the products I picked up during the Summer release from Moonalisa, and a chat about indie sellers and the relationship to the customers.

I love Moona's products - I know that they are all high quality, and whenever I've contacted the Moo Crew, I've received timely and helpful replies. So I pretty much decided to take a chance on several new products and scents in this release, and I am so pleased with everything!

As Packaged
In my last order I received a sample of the Vegan Jelly Soap, and I loved it, so I made sure to order a full size. I also picked up the leave-in conditioner spray (new to me) and finally purchased a perfume oil. I received a lovely deluxe sample of a charcoal face wash, which is perfect, because I really can't get enough of charcoal washes right now. Moonalisa always sends lovely samples, good sizes and often of new or future products.

The Jelly Soap is in an amazing container. Sturdy and not going to be easily affected by my humid shower room, it has the added benefit of being mildly translucent, so I can see the soap wiggling around. 💘

The perfume oil came in a lovely little box, with the mermaid from the collection's beach theme on the outside. The detangler is packaged with two caps, one for shipping with the spray top separate to prevent leaks. All in all, very professional and very much appreciated by someone who lives in a hot desert climate, and doesn't want to lose product to the heat or poor shipping practices!

Everything Open
So, lets talk about the products, and the scents. I'm going to start with the perfume oil, as I purchased it in Duchess of Willowdale, one of my favorite Moona scents. It came in a lovely little bottle with a roll-on applicator, and the oil is certainly good quality. I was most impressed with the scent. In this form, Duchess of Willowdale still smelled exactly like the lotions I've purchased in the scent, and it lasted for several hours, until I took a bath. I highly, highly recommend this scent for anyone with a penchant for gourmand/tobacco/coffee type scents. It is by far one of the best I've ever tried. The scent is described as "Notes are reminiscent of old Victorian parlors: honey, Amber, and pipe tobacco, but with added notes of deep, dark, rich chocolates."

Speaking of coffee scents, I chose Black Mamba for the Leave-In Conditioner. I've used the conditioner once so far and it seems really nice. The scent, though, is lovely! In the bottle, Black Mamba reminded my slightly of Thai mango sticky rice, but once in my hair, the true scent came through, a deliciously deep coffee and sweet scent. Black Mamba is described as "named after one the deadliest snakes in the world! Delve deeply into the dark and exciting aromas of Caribbean rum, rich Hazelnut dusted marshmallow cream, Black Vanilla, simple syrup and dark, freshly brewed coffee." It smells exactly as described!

The Jelly Soap was probably the item I was most excited for. I loved my sample (in the scent Jello Shots) but decided to order the full size in the scent Bali Cloud. I haven't used it yet, but in the jar, Bali Cloud smells like a deliciously alcoholic orange dreamsicle, and Moona describes the scent as "EO's of Sweet Orange Peel, Ylang Ylang, and FOs of Sandalwood and Creamy Vanilla. A mix of my Orange Cloud and Bali scent, because Moona gets so confused which is which, she decided to mix them together instead. This scent is like fresh peeled oranges with a sweet woody background. They smell wonderful and relaxing! The Ylang Ylang is hardly detectable in this scent and only enhances the sweetness of the fresh orange smell." I'm not sure what I am smelling on cold sniff, but it is good!

Because I have several charcoal-based cleansers active already I haven't tried the sample sent, but I am excited for it! Now, a quick chat. I want to remind everyone, that when you buy from indie shops, you are usually buying direct from the creator, and not through a third (or fourth, or fifth) party. These are people creating something with love, and then offering it to the public, and both their tie and work needs to be respected. That said, if you are going to promote yourself as a business, you need to conduct yourself as a business and over years and years of buying indie bath & body products, only once have I ever run into a seller who did not conduct themselves with integrity, where i had to respond with actions taken. A seller who gets behind on shipments due to life and outside interference is not a bad seller. Most of these shops bend over backwards for the customers, so to see people going off over communicated delays is frustrating. As long as a shop owner is communicating, that is being responsible. Most people were probably given the option to cancel orders (I actually never saw the emails myself because for some reason I'm not receiving the newsletter anymore). So, just be respectful, is all I'm saying.

Sexy, Sexy Summer

I've been talking about this for ages and finally filmed it. I love celeb gossip, and The Daily Mail is pretty much my religion. Luckily, they love to post about two of my favorite babes, Demi Mawby and Emily Ratajkowski. This is a sexy but not too "done" look I see them wearing all the time, so here it is recreated for you. 💙

Sunday, June 17, 2018

Oooh, girl time to smell like the OCEAN!!

I LOVE beach scents in the Summer, but I am NOT fond of smelling like sunscreen. These are my favorite perfumes to carry you through the hot weather smelling like a fresh seaside breeze. (And not the Jersey Shore kind, ya feel me?)

Now go out there and smell like you've just come back from the Hamptons.♥

Messy, Glossy Eyes

Switching back to makeup in my newest video. I haven't done a tutorial in ages! This is the style of makeup I wore to parties and clubs in the late 90's/early 2k and I'm SO excited it's back on trend! Black is great, but this also works well with a cranberry or navy smokey eye. Enjoy!

If you have a recommendation of what you'd like to see next, please let me know. ♥

*NEW* Moonalisa Summer 2018 Goodies!

The Summer 2018 collection from Moonalisa was released in April, and my order arrived today! If you're unfamiliar with the brand, don't worry - they have a total cult following, and seasonal release dates instead of keeping a general catalog on hand makes it difficult to start trying the products - but they are worth it!

I suggest signing up for the newsletter so you know when the next release will fall. There are also Potion Lotions (a great lightweight moisturizer) and Milk Bath left. The Summer 2018 scent catalog is here for your convenience. From what I can tell, there are certain scents that are seasonal, and others that can show up year-round, which also makes it hard to choose! I've just gone with a handful of favorites that I order whenever they show up.

This time around one of my very favorites, Duchess of Willowdale was available! You may have seen me mention this product on Instagram - I had it in the Ultra Whip from two winters ago, which was a much lighter format. This time I ordered the Crazy for Cocoa Cream because I felt the mild cocoa scent would complement Duchess of Willowdale, and it does!

Duchess of Willowdale is described as "reminiscent of old Victorian parlors: honey, Amber, and pipe tobacco, but with added notes of deep, dark, rich chocolates." It is a delicious gourmand scent that definitely works year-round. I wish Moonalisa had released the Ultra Whips this past winter, but alas. No such luck. The Cocoa Cream is decadently rich, however, and feels ultra moisturizing - something I really need in summer as my skin dries out with this Las Vegas sun!

Included was also a sample of a new? product that I hope will be forthcoming - The Jello Blob Jelly Soap. Whatttt? My last experience with bathtub "gelly" products didn't go over so well, but this stuff looks... well, it looks kinda bomb.

I have it in the scent "Jello Shots" which is apropos and smells exactly like it sounds. A kind of cherry/fruit punch hybrid that makes me appreciate the DO NOT EAT warning on the label, lol. I'm not sure if this scent is the only one that they have made for this product, but regardless, I am super eager to try it out, and I hope it works well, because I'd love to buy more when they are released! (Of course, that's assuming this product will be for release, which I do not know, as I did not reach out to Moonalisa for confirmation. If it was just a fun bonus then, I am SO glad I ordered in this round!)

So there you have my (tiny) Moonalisa haul. One of these days I will pick up one of her perfume oils or sprays, but there are so many great product choices, it's pretty hard to narrow down the list! Some of my recommendations include:

  • Potion Lotion
  • 4in1 Shower
  • Argan Oil Hair Rescue
  • Ultra Whip (when offered)
If you decide to snatch up a Potion Lotion or Milk Bath before they're gone, some of my favorite scents are:
  • Duchess of Willowdale
  • Pineapple Express
  • Blue Milk
Just remember that not every scent is available in every format. Now I'm going to go lather up with a jello shot, and then slather myself in chocolate-y goodness. Toodles!

Video Review - Sephora Favorites DELUXE Perfume Sampler

The Review : Burberry My Burberry Blush

As I just wrote that title, my fingers automatically typed out "My Murberry" which says a lot on how I feel towards this fragrance, and Burberry scents in general. Spoiler alert.

Image via Macy's

I've purchased the Deluxe Perfume Sampler from Sephora, and have begun the process of deciding which scent to redeem for the full size. It's not this one. Spoiler alert. What I DID decide to do was offer reviews of some of the scents I have chosen to NOT redeem for - but only the scents that are new to me. So, no Flowerbomb or French Grey reviews, as if you needed them. (Flowerbomb is terrible and French Grey is lovely but I don't plan to redeem for either due to this or that.)

We start off with My Burberry Blush eau de parfum and I am going to start my mini rant, which is this - in my (very humble) opinion, please fashion houses, don't do perfume.

There are some exceptions. Chanel. Balenciaga. Issey Miyake. Tom Ford. Hell, I will even give Gucci and D&G a pass. But not Burberry. Oh no, not Burberry.

To a fault Burberry fragrances are terrible, and My Burberry Blush is no exception. I'm talking men's AND women's scents here, people. Awful. Just awful. The creative director at House Burberry needs to return to figuring what else they can put plaid on, instead of allowing these monstrosities that are labeled "perfume" to continue.

Okay, well, now you know my opinion. Let's talk about the scent.

30mL eau de parfum retails for $68 USD. According to Sephora "My Burberry Blush steps back into a London garden as it awakens in the first light of day. Capturing the senses, blossoming flowers open with a burst of energy, while dapples of glowing light weave, twist, and turn through the flora. Created by perfumers Francis Kurkdjian and Christopher Bailey, the fragrance opens with sharp pomegranate fused with vibrant lemon. Delicate rose petal notes are lifted with crisp apple, while a base of jasmine and wisteria round off the scent for an intensely feminine touch."

Mr. Kurkdjian I am appalled. Maison Kurkdjian has always provided innovative, classic French perfumery, not to mention your work on Carven le Parfum and Elizabeth Arden Green Tea both of which I have and love. To see your name on these Burberry "perfume" options is quite distressing. I am vexed. I must have a chair, and my smelling salts. I am so very British-ly offended at this moment. Let's move on.

The top notes are lemon and pomegranate, with a heart of geranium, rose, and apple. Our base notes are jasmine and wisteria, and we begin to see a problem. In an effort to make this scent truly "blush" composition and depth has been  sacrificed for this airy sweetness that has no true substance.

I am slightly prejudiced in this matter, as I am no fan of apple as a scent component. That isn't to say that if Blush were a truly beautiful and unique scent, it wouldn't work. As it is, this fragrance has clearly been developed to cater to the mass market, and I have no doubt it will do so (it has 4.4/5 stars on Sephora at the time of this writing) but unfortunately, there is no longevity, no decent sillage, and certainly no composition to make this scent a true stand out in the long run, even from Burberry.

My rating: ♦♦ - A safe enough scent to gift this Mother's Day (well, belated Mother's Day) but nothing that will make an impression or be memorable in the long run. The perfume version of a gas station floral bouquet.

Luckily, the next scent I have tried and passed is much nicer than this - surprisingly, since this House, too, I have been underwhelmed with. Until then.

Men's Cologne - what MEN want, what WOMEN LOVE

The subjects I queried for this video come from all walks of life and multiple countries - USA, Australia, UK, France, Germany, Brazil, Peru, Canada. I chose the top three answers given by men, and because there was an overwhelming response from women for their top two, I've added a third of my own choice. Something no one talks about, that I think deserves some recognition!
