So, I know that Mondays (or is it Tuesdays? I had Park Avenue South and Madison Square Park now I can't find the anywhere... so. I know they are around somewhere, unless one of my children ran off with them (they do look like crackers, so it's possible), and hopefully I can do that for Friday (Thursday? I don't even know my own schedule. However, I wasn't resting on my laurels this whole time - I present to you my first video post!

Episode 37: Bergamot (or, Bergamot-a Spice, Surprise, Surprise)

The was meant to be put up yesterday because hey! regular posting schedule, but I had an internet blackout, and so here it is, late. Surprised? Nah. Bergamot is one of my favorite, favorite perfume notes but before I started getting more interested in the why's and how's of perfume, I thought it was a spice, along the lines of like... cardamom or something (is that a spice?). I was surprised to learn so much about a fave, and I hope you will be, too. Here we go.

Citrus bergamia

Yes, you read right. Bergamot is a citrus note, in fact extracted from the bitter orange. While the fruit of this plant is not known to be edible, the peel is used in a variety of ways, from flavoring foodstuffs, to aromatherapy to cosmetics. However, when used in large quantities, bergamot oil can be toxic, and it can be unsafe in skin care due to its photocarcinogenic and phototoxic properties. However, that doesn't stop bergamot essential oil from being a popular addition to everything from tea, to perfume. Bergamot is known for its ability to relax and improve mood, while boosting digestive functions (if taken internally). The oil has a watery viscosity and can be green to green-yellow in color. The first record of bergamot as a fragrance component is in the original 4711 Cologne, from Germany in the 18th century.
From Harvey Prince
Bergamot is one of the most popular notes in perfumery today, and it has a light citrus-y, spicy quality that is also warm and sweet. It is most often found as a top note, but with the right fixatives it can act well as a heart note, too. It mixes well with many other scents and so it can be found in a variety of fragrances. Some popular scents that use bergamot include the 4711 Original Eau de Cologne, Chanel Coco Mademoiselle and Yves Saint Laurent La Nuit de l'Homme. Information from Wikipedia, Esoteric Oils and Harvey Prince.

I remember very vividly my first exposure to bergamot. It was when I was a young teen, and I had gotten the idea that drinking tea was very classy and highbrow. We only had weird herbal teas, and regular old Lipton's at my house, so one day at a restaurant, I ordered hot tea. When offered the selection, I chose Earl Grey because I thought it sounded classy. I was actually quite put off by the taste and smell! It wasn't until years later that I developed a taste for the unique odor of bergamot, but now both bergamot and Earl Grey rank among my favorite things. So that's kind of how I'd suggest you familiarize yourself with the scent - do you like the smell of Earl (or Lady) Grey tea? Yes? Then you like bergamot. No? Then you don't. Granted, this scent mixes well with others, so as always it is possible to like perfume with bergamot notes, and not like the scent in its self!
So now we've done another of my favorites! Next time I run this series (I still can't guarantee it will be weekly) I am going to try and pick something that isn't a fave and, more importantly, isn't a citrus! How surprising that someone who doesn't like traditional citrus scents would like so many citrus notes? Is that why perfume is fun? Pleasant journeys!

Episode 36: TAG - Would You Rather? (or, Wacky Wednesday)

Howdy, well, yes, I am on vacation 'tis true and I know it is what you are thinking. But I had to bring my work along with me, and since I have a computer I wanted to post something for you all. Now, I don't have access to my usual arsenal, so I am going to have some fun and do a tag. Originally found through From Head to Toe, I will alter some questions to fit the theme of this blog.

Would You Rather?

  1. Would you rather lose all of your mascaras, eyeshadows, lipsticks, and palettes or lose all of your perfume? This is pretty tough, since I don't consider fragrance a cosmetic item, but rather an accessory. I've gone without makeup for long periods of time, though, so I'd chose cosmetics.
  2. Would you rather chop off all your hair or never be able to cut it again? Never cut it again. I have a hot-air balloon size head, and short hair is terrifying. I can deal with ragged ends. I'll chew them off, LOL.
  3. Would you rather have a coral cheek or a pink cheek? Coral, I suppose. In reality, neither - I'd go with red or just bronze, if I had to chose.
  4. If you had $1000 to spend, would you rather buy clothes or perfume? Perfume, for sure. I dress like a hobo, but if I had 1k to spend right now I'd splurge on something Clive Christian or Agonist.
  5. Would you rather apply lipstick as eyeliner, or eyeliner as lipstick? Intriguingly random. Eyeliner as a lipstick, for sure - I feel like the opposite would give you an infection.
  6. Would you rather only shop at MAC or Sephora? Sephora is bae.
  7. Would you rather only use one lip color or one scented body product for the rest of your life? It would be impossible for me to choose one scent and never change again, so I'd pick the lip color. For reference, that color would be "Plink" from MAC.
  8. Would you rather wear winter clothes in summer or summer clothes in winter? WINTER CLOTHES IN SUMMER. If you know me, you know that I am always, always cold. I sweat like Armageddon as it is, so heavy clothes in the heat ain't no thang.
  9. Would you rather wear winter scents or summer scents all year round? I prefer heavier, woodsy, musky fragrance, so I'd pick winter. Although I do think I over did it last year - my pendulum has been swinging towards airy, citrus-florals.
  10. Would you rather give up your favorite lip product or your favorite eye product? Lip or eye, lip or eye, jeez these people are obsessed. Well, I'll bite. I'd give up eye products, because I don't care about anything but mascara, and I can get my lashes tinted anyway. But I love playing with lipstick and gloss, so I'd hate to give that up!
  11. Would you rather only be able to wear your hair in a ponytail or a messy bun? Bun, bun, bun, bun, bun (to the tune of "Thong Song" by Sisqó).
  12. Would your rather never be able to paint your nails again or never use perfume? Do you even read this blog? That's a trick question - I rigged it, muahaha. Actually, I don't paint my nails to begin with, so the answer is clear.
  13. Would you rather shave your eyebrows and have none at all or sharpie them in everyday? I am leaving this question intact to point out how stupidly it was worded - why would you sharpie eyebrows in, unless you had shaved them anyways? Whatever. Pass.
  14. Would you rather live without makeup or nail polish? OH HUM, WHAT A CONUNDRUM. Dude, I'd give up both - I've already mentioned that at least twice. My priorities go like... perfume, makeup, everything else, nails. That just sums it up nicely.
I hope you enjoyed this inane tag, and I probably should have vetted it a little bit better, but it is four in the morning and I can't sleep. Remember, next week I will return to the normal posting schedule - you can see it here. Have an excellent weekend and APRIL FOOL'S DAY!!!
